"Poetry with wit, humor, irony, perspicacity and revolutionary politics brought a warmth and smile during my weakest moments. I will never ever forget the therapy i received"—Fred Ho, Cancer Warrior.

FREEDOM . . .

. . . is as much the leopard

which has a baby wildebeest

by the throat as it is

all of the other wildebeests who

have made good their escape.

How often do we marvel at the way

predator and herd—each

taking only what is required or else

giving back in the same spirit—

have found a balance

so that both might survive?

Now, however, consider the tiniest

of cancer cells inhabiting a body

such as mine. Grant to this being

a freedom as modest as that

claimed by our leopard and I

will one day find myself inhabiting

the same world as our baby wildebeest.

The tumor, however cannot

comprehend that my final gasp

sounds it's death knell too.

And you who believe yourselves

to be freer than the leopard because

like cancer cells there is no limit

to what you are able to destroy,

who spread like an uncomprehending

malignancy infecting our planet, what end

can you imagine for this tumor

sometimes referred to as "humanity"?

ADVICE TO ASPIRING POETS

1.

Suppose that it comes true:

Your name in lights, outshining all

others in this vast galaxy

        of poetry.

How hard, then, to envision the next

day but one, when another will

become the toast, a brighter star

        eclipsing yours?

What then? Does this future-you

remember words worth all the energy

that has been spent upon them?

Will they be sufficient

        to sustain you?

If so let me suggest that you allow

them to sustain you now, disregard

the rest. For such words, surely,

are present as we speak, and (I reveal

no secret here) will remain

the only element of poetry which

becomes a part of who you are

        forever.

2.

Enter our present endeavor with dreams

of fame and each fellow poet, every

critic, all those in attendance

at your next reading, any journal editor,

curators of  random websites,

not to mention so many judges of

too many contests, lie between you

        and your goal.

Engage, however, with a simple

pledge to be the best poet

you can possibly become

and suddenly there is only one

individual who can ever stand

in your way.
